The common rat, also known as the brown rat (for obvious reasons), Norway rat, and sewer rat (for reasons that are also obvious) is prevalent across the whole of the UK and is not something that you want around your home, garden, or business. Without counting the tail, it can be up to a foot long and weigh up to 1¼ lbs. It is different from the black rat since, apart from the colour, it is larger, and its’ tail is shorter than the length of its’ body.
Brown rats have a well-developed sense of smell, taste, and touch, and are particularly good at hearing. Indeed, they often use ultrasound in order to communicate with each other. As with mice, they breed very rapidly and are sexually mature at the age of three months. Each female can produce between three and 12 litters a year of between six and eight young. That means that each female can produce between 20 and 100 young every year, and each of the females in those litters can do the same – starting at the age of three months! You can very readily see that a rat population can explode rapidly.
If you see any rats around your Grimsby home, you need to get rid of them fast. They carry a number of diseases, including Weil’s disease. They also need to chew things constantly in order to keep their incisor teeth down, as these grow throughout their lives. They will chew woodwork, lead pipes, bricks, plastic, and – alarmingly – electricity cables, which can obviously lead to fires.
A good way to get rid of rats is to use rat poison in Grimsby. However, you need to take considerable care because using rat poison in Grimsby can also result in the death of pets if they should happen across it. First generation rat poison in Grimsby causes the rat to die slowly over a period of several days. Second generation rat poison causes death within four days but is lethal to humans and pets. There is also another poison, which is neurotoxin, causing swelling of the brain and it kills within two days. This is also lethal to humans and pets and there is no antidote for it.
